Traditional Art - Winter Semester 2017

Description

The past few months, rather than working on my comics consistently (besides Dear Dragon, but that's just because it's like doodling) I've been attending university, taking lots of art classes! So this is a selection of my best pieces from the course of the semester, roughly in chronological order from top to bottom. The Abe Lincoln one belongs farther down chronologically, but meh.

Supplies were charcoal on "parson" paper, a low-tooth paper that the school uses; sharpie on parson paper, for the two at the top; ink on parson paper with transfer paper used for the dragon on the house; white charcoal on dark toned paper (for the boot and the two head drawings); and there were two head drawings in there that were a combination of white and black charcoal on lighter toned paper.

Fun story - the picture in the middle, with the two pictures of the bald model, are both mine. The one on the right is my first try, in class; the one on the left, my second try, with my brother's instruction and critique. It turned out so much better, I loved the side-by-side! My older brother is an excellent teacher.

My favorite pieces from the whole semester were probably the cowboy boot (that's MY boot, even - they're my favorite pair of shoes, I never have to wear anything else!) the fully-toned head drawing at the bottom, and the picture of the flute and paper crane on my poncho.

The bottom photo is a side-by-side of my progress in the Head Drawing class. All three drawings are 50 minutes pieces, drawing from a live model in class. The one on the left is my first try, at the start of the semester - and the one on the right is my final one from the last day of class. I'm really proud of my progress! And I'm proud of that last head drawing, for 50 minutes. XD For a comparison, the one above it, with the guy, I put in a solid 7 hours of work on it.

I learned a lot this semester, had a lot of fun doing it, and hopefully the quality of my work will rise in all areas accordingly. ^^ Woohoo!

Wow, the amount of improvement from beginning to end is so striking! I find it really encouraging too, seeing an artist genuinely improve from being taught how to draw. I've been slipping into the fear of "I'm not talented enough" lately so remembering that the work and learning is necessary too is super uplifting. Hope your art continues to improve and become what you dream of drawing!
