Description
It's important to take time to do projects just for fun, even if you have a lot of other important artwork to do. 
Which is why, instead of working on commission pieces or Dragontry, I found myself taking a moment to paint a Steven Universe fan character.
Heh.
I just adore the show Steven Universe - it's easily become my favorite all time animated show (very narrowly beating out My Little Pony and Gravity Falls. It was a close race.) It helps that both I and my mom (who is ALSO a huge SU fan) are also big fans of ROCKS in general...so a lot of our gushing over the show has to do with the way the show works in different known qualities of gems and minerals and how interesting that is. XD
Anyway, since we're big rock nerds, on my recent roadtrip with her, we ended up travelling through a lot of beautiful mountain passes, deserts, and highway tourist stops that sold...you guessed it...rocks. So we came home loaded down with flourite, malachite, tigers' eye, red sandstone, hematite, petrified wood, you name it. My favorite piece that I got, though, was this big beautiful chunk of sheen obsidian. And it's the perfect size and shape to be a Steven Universe gem...so I just had to make a fan character of my chunk of obsidian. <3
Sheen, as she likes to be called, is an energetic warrior with little common sense. She tends to just run into battle with figurative guns blazing, and thus gets poofed often, but she doesn't mind. Originally I was going to design her weapon to be a jagged-edged sword, but then I thought of this beaut - a maquahuitl! Which is a kind of Aztec mace/club/sword. Very good for bashing things as well as cutting them. A weapon which, incidentally, tends to be edged with sharpened obsidian! So it was a perfect fit for Sheen here.
And I included a photo of my chunk of obsidian up in the corner there, with my hand for size comparison. I will never use this character for anything, but it was fun to imagine my rock as a gem, and fun to paint as well.

Really cool. I dare you to cosplay as Sheen next Halloween, Sarah. That would just be great.
One thing I like doing when I write is having at least one character a fictional version of, well..... myself. It wasn't intentional when I wrote my first story, but then I just kind of let myself put one in any world I made or liked. So I really like the characters that you, Sarah, come up with, and the ones which resemble, or personify something about you, it feels much deeper than just some ol' shmo who happens to be a protagonist, or even a side character, and does stuff. If the characters have real heart, even if they don't look like much, then the story is rich. Your stories are like that. Thanks for keeping the world of fiction real. You and your work are some of the best inspirations I've got.
