Remnants 58 - VS Shauntal

Description

We went on to the next tower.

The stairs in the next tower were lit by flickering blue candles. They reminded me of Litwick. We went up the stairs, towards the arena at the top, where the light glowed. As we got higher, I noticed that the walls were covered in books - the entire tower was a massive library.

At the very top, the arena was filled with books. They sat in towering haphazard stacks, tipping and wobbling but somehow staying upright. Sitting in the midst of the heaps, cross-legged on the floor with a typewriter in her lap, was a woman. She had round hair, round dark clothes, and round eyes behind round black-rimmed glasses.

I stared at her for a second. She didn't seem to notice me - her fingers were flickering over the keys. Finally I cleared my throat loudly. "Ahem...uh, can we battle now?"

"One sec. One sec." She stopped typing, reading what she had written. "Oooone...sec. Okay. Yeah, sure." She set the typewriter down and hopped up, smiling. "Sorry, I was working on my fantasy novel. It's based on current events - I'm calling it 'The Dragon's Heir.' Pretty good title, huh?"

"Yeah, it's great." I nodded to Sonata. "Let's go, then."

"Right, right." said the woman. "I'm Shauntal, user of ghost types. Let's finish this quick, I want to get twenty more pages done tonight."

She sent out a Cofagrigus, and Sonata swooped into battle.

One Night Slash took out the ghost. But as Sonata struck it, a shimmer of extoplasm clung to her foot. She grimaced, and when I scanned the fight with my Pokedex, it said her ability had been changed to Mummy. No Super Luck for this fight, it seemed.

A Drifblim was sent next. Another Night Slash and it was gone. But as it fell, Sonata gasped - its Aftermath ability sliced through her, knocking off a chunk of her HP.

"Sonata, are you okay?" I called to her.

She nodded, clacking her beak. "I'm fine. I'm fine." She said. So I let her stay in.

Then Shauntal sent out a Chandelure. Once again, a Night Slash OHKO'ed it. But as Sonata tore through the flaming Pokemon, a spurt of fire caught her on the wing, and she hissed. She was Burned.

"Alright, that's enough." I said firmly. "Sonata, come back, you're hurt."

She didn't object, and so I sent out Leatho. As Sonata flew back to me, he nodded, then turned to the fight.

The last Pokemon of Shauntal's was Golurk. One Surf sent it rolling, one-hit KO.

So we beat Shauntal.

Shauntal congratulated me, distractedly, and went back to writing her book. I sat down with Sonata, giving her a Full Restore. "I'm proud of you." I said with a smile. "But I think you should take a break for the next fight. Alright?"

She looked a little put out, but she nodded. "Alright."

"Good."

So we headed down the stairs.

(It wasn't so much a close call as being cautious. I didn't want to risk that Burn causing anything nasty with Sonata. But it was an easy win.)
