It was a day after the fight. My arm was healing just fine - Leon's Dragon Claw attack wasn't terribly powerful, so although my arm ached a little, I was fine to train. So I went back to training with Kitt.
And that's when he leveled up to 32, and learned a new attack. Double Hit.
He was fighting an Audino, lashing at it with Return. His tail whipped and spun, over and over, and suddenly it seemed as if they were two...and I checked my Pokedex, and I was right. He had learned Double Hit instead of Return.
A lump rose to my throat. You see, years ago, I had looked up information on Aipom and stuff. Since Kitt was my best friend, and we looked it up together, curious if we became a trainer team. We learned that Aipom didn't evolve until they learned that attack - Double Hit.
So I wasn't surprised when Kitt landed on the ground, and started to glow.
He turned around, looking surprised. "Tabby, I'm -!"
"Evolving. Yeah." I sat down.
He hopped over to me, his eyes wide. "Are you...I mean, is this okay? Is this good?"
"Of course!" I shook my head. "I'm just, you know. Kitt, you've been my best friend for years...and I guess I'm kind of...I mean, you'll look totally different."
He smiled crookedly, glowing brighter. "I'll still be me." He put his paw on my hand. "If you want me to stop evolving, I can. You can teach me Return again with a TM, and I won't evolve. But," he said solemnly, "I want to be my strongest, for you, and for this team."
I nodded. "I know."
"Then do you think you're ready for this? That I'm ready?"
I smiled, then picked up him in a hug. The last hug where he'd be small. Because I said, "Of course you're ready."
The glow became too bright, and I had to close my eyes. But I felt him grow bigger in my arms. Bigger and bigger, wrapping his arms around my neck. Finally the light softened, and I opened my eyes.
I sat back, looking at him thoughtfully.
Kitt had finally evolved into an Ambipom. He had two long tails, thick fur, and two long locks of fur on his head. He was a bit broader too, bulkier, more muscled. He was three feet tall, as tall as my shoulders. He certainly wouldn't fit on my shoulder anymore.
I was silent for a moment. Then I said with a smile, "Yep. Different. But good."
He grinned at me, tapping my nose. "I agree."

(So this is a good milestone.
Kitt evolved! Ah, my little starter. <3 I love him so much. Aipom are awesome to train, when you teach them a good moveset early on! He's got a fantastic Attack and Speed stat, which is great for nuzlocking. He's definitely a rock of my team.)
